Gerardo‘s journey is intertwined with the formation of Homies Unidos, a non-profit organization that originated in Los Angeles and later expanded its reach to Denver. Originally founded by former gang members in the early ’90s, Homies Unidos seeks to break the cycle of violence and provide opportunities for individuals seeking a path away from gang involvement.
In his role as Executive Director, Gerardo has played a pivotal role in shaping the vision and mission of Homies Unidos Denver. Under his leadership, the organization has expanded its programs to address the root causes of gang involvement, offering a comprehensive range of services, including education, job training, mental health support, and community outreach.
Gerardo’s commitment to social justice and community empowerment is evident in his advocacy work. José Martínez-Castellanos
Passionate about community engagement, education, and effective communication, José brings a wealth of experience, including strong operational expertise, to Homies Unidos Denver’s mission in youth empowerment and development. With a background in marketing and program coordination, José started his career as a Social Media & Content Coordinator at Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Early College. Here, he utilized digital media to create a compelling online presence and fostered community through event coordination and impactful content creation in videography, photography, and graphic design.
José coordinated over 500 events, from Back-to-School Nights to graduation ceremonies, emphasizing community touchpoints and celebrating students’ achievements. His commitment to a positive school culture included managing various social media platforms, resulting in a substantial increase in online followers and successful engagement strategies. At Generation Teach, José served as a Student Support Team Leader and Dean of Operations, showcasing his operational acumen by developing plans for a summer academy and building meaningful relationships through restorative practices.
José believes in the transformative power of education and effective communication. His bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish expands his influence, connecting with diverse communities.
